PHNOM PENH, May 4, 2026 (KPT) — The United States has praised ASEAN observers for their role in monitoring the Cambodia–Thailand border and supporting the implementation of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords.

In a statement posted Monday, the US Embassy in Phnom Penh said it was pleased to meet members of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) stationed in Cambodia.

“Their mission to observe, verify and report on the border situation remains critical to the implementation of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords,” it said.

Signed in October 2025 in Malaysia, the accord was brokered with US involvement and hosted by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. It aimed to ease tensions and end clashes along the frontier.

The embassy commended Malaysia’s commanders for a “successful mission” and thanked the Philippines for leading the observer teams during its ASEAN chairmanship.

Philippine Foreign Secretary Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro earlier underscored the importance of the AOT in ensuring the ceasefire, urging both sides to fully implement the agreement in line with international law.

According to the US Mission to ASEAN, the accord established observer teams to build trust and support long-term peace efforts. It also included Thailand’s pledge to release 18 Cambodian soldiers detained since July.

Cambodia’s foreign ministry, however, has accused Thailand of continuing to occupy areas it claims as its territory, stressing Phnom Penh does not recognise border changes imposed by force.

The Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords are viewed as a significant diplomatic effort to reduce tensions, though disputes remain unresolved.
