Cambodia Reiterates Commitment to Border, Maritime Agreements and Ceasefire

PHNOM PENH, May 5, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia has reaffirmed its commitment to fully implement existing border agreements with Thailand, including the 2025 ceasefire, while voicing concern over reports that Bangkok may withdraw from a long standing maritime memorandum.
Government spokesman Pen Bona said Tuesday that Phnom Penh “strictly and sincerely” respects the ceasefire and the spirit of the Joint Statement issued on December 27, 2025, along with all previously agreed arrangements.
He added Cambodia had exercised “the highest level of restraint” to ease tensions and create conditions for a peaceful settlement.
Bona expressed support for the ASEAN Observer Team’s role in monitoring the ceasefire and stressed Cambodia’s defence of its internationally recognised frontier, citing treaties, maps and demarcation records under the principle of uti possidetis juris.
“Cambodia does not recognise any alteration of the border resulting from the use of force,” he said.
On maritime issues, Bona voiced disappointment over reports the Thai cabinet is considering withdrawing from the 2001 memorandum of understanding, warning that a unilateral move would undermine a mechanism relied on for more than two decades.
Despite this, he said Cambodia remains committed to resolving disputes peacefully under international law.
