Thousands Still Displaced as Cambodia Questions Thai Ceasefire Compliance

PHNOM PENH, April 6, 2026 (KPT) —Interior Ministry says tens of thousands of people remain displaced along the Thai border despite a ceasefire agreed late last year, accusing Bangkok of failing to fully respect commitments under joint border mechanisms.
In a report covering May 4–5, officials said more than 610,000 people — about 95 percent of those uprooted by clashes — have returned home. But around 32,900 remain unable to do so, including more than 17,000 women and over 11,000 children.
The ministry noted that schools and health facilities remain closed in provinces such as Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey and Preah Vihear, underscoring the continuing disruption to community life.
No new damage to civilian infrastructure has been reported since December 2025, when earlier destruction was documented.
Despite the ceasefire coming into effect on December 27, officials accused Thailand of “bad faith” actions and said Cambodia has been documenting violations while pursuing legal and diplomatic responses.
The ministry called on Bangkok to halt unilateral measures and resume joint border demarcation work through the General Border Committee.
It also urged Cambodians at home and abroad to support Prime Minister Hun Manet’s efforts to resolve the dispute peacefully and in line with international law.
Officials stressed the government’s priority remains restoring normal life for affected communities and ensuring long term stability along the frontier.
