Cambodia Institutions Back Government’s UNCLOS Conciliation Move

PHNOM PENH, May 7, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s Constitutional Council and Ministry of Information have voiced full support for the government’s decision to initiate compulsory conciliation under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) after Thailand’s unilateral withdrawal from a 2001 maritime memorandum of understanding.

In separate statements issued Thursday, both institutions reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to resolving maritime disputes through peaceful dialogue and international law.

The Constitutional Council stressed that Article 2 of the Constitution guarantees the inviolability of Cambodia’s territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders. It said the government’s recourse to UNCLOS reflects a strong commitment to peace, the rule of law and the peaceful settlement of disputes in line with principles backed by the international community.

The Ministry of Information said Cambodia’s reliance on UNCLOS demonstrates its dedication to peace, good neighborly relations and constructive dialogue. It reaffirmed support for the government’s efforts to defend national interests and sovereignty while pursuing lawful resolution of maritime issues.

The ministry also urged media institutions, journalists and digital platforms to disseminate accurate and balanced information to strengthen public understanding and promote national unity. Cambodia remains committed to resolving disputes peacefully while maintaining respect for international law and regional stability.
