Cambodia, Thailand Agree to Pursue Peaceful Dialogue After ASEAN Mediation

LAPU-LAPU CITY (Cebu), May 7, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to continue peaceful dialogue and avoid escalating border tensions following mediation led by ASEAN chair and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during the ASEAN Summit in Cebu.
The understanding was reached after talks between Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, hosted by Mr Marcos on the sidelines of the regional gathering.
President Marcos said both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining communication and exercising restraint along disputed frontier areas.
“They were very clear in their commitment to peace and their intention to avoid further conflict,” he noted, adding that discussions covered existing agreements and new measures to restore stability.
Both governments pledged to resume direct talks and pursue confidence‑building steps, while the ASEAN Observer Team will continue monitoring the border situation until July.
Marcos stressed the Philippines would keep offering its “good offices” to facilitate dialogue in line with ASEAN principles and international law.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet described the meeting as a step toward “lasting peace,” citing plans to revive bilateral mechanisms including the Joint Boundary Commission, General Border Committee and Regional Border Committee.
Anutin said the talks were held in a “friendly and fruitful” atmosphere, affirming Thailand’s commitment to work with Cambodia to prevent conflict and instructing foreign ministers to advance practical measures swiftly.
