NEW YORK, May 25, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn is expected to meet his Thai counterpart, Sihasak Phuangketkeow, on the sidelines of a United Nations Security Council debate in New York this week.

The encounter follows talks earlier this month in the Philippines between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, where both leaders discussed ways to ease tensions along their shared frontier.

Prak Sokhonn, leading a Cambodian delegation, is attending the high‑level Security Council debate chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Communist Party’s Political Bureau. While in New York, he is scheduled to take part in side events and hold bilateral meetings with foreign counterparts.

According to Cambodia’s foreign ministry, discussions will focus on strengthening ties, advancing cooperation and exchanging views on issues of mutual concern.

The meeting comes amid renewed friction after Cambodia’s Defense Ministry lodged a formal protest with Bangkok on May 24, following reports that Thai troops fired 22 rounds near the O’Smach International Border Checkpoint in Oddar Meanchey province.

The Royal Cambodian Armed Forces said the gunfire, described as “unprovoked,” was heard between 09:24 and 10:10 local time on Sunday in an area claimed by Cambodia but currently occupied by Thai forces.
