NEW YORK, May 27, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s foreign minister has told the United Nations Security Council that borders and sovereignty “must never be altered by force or through fait accompli,” warning against violations despite a continuing ceasefire with Thailand.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn made the remarks during a high‑level debate at UN headquarters in New York on May 26.

He voiced concern about “the situation on the ground in the occupied areas well inside Cambodian territory,” stressing that peace agreements must be implemented “fully, effectively and urgently.”

Prak Sokhonn said adherence to international law, treaties and existing accords, alongside dialogue and mutual respect, was essential to restoring trust, securing lasting peace and enabling displaced civilians to return home safely.

He called on the international community to continue supporting efforts to resolve the dispute and maintain regional stability, adding that a strengthened multilateral system centred on the UN was vital to protecting smaller and developing nations.

“The UN Charter must remain the cornerstone of international relations and the indispensable framework for peaceful coexistence, cooperation and conflict prevention,” he said.

Referring to Cambodia’s history, Prak Sokhonn recalled the role of the UN Transitional Authority in the early 1990s in supporting peace and reconciliation, saying Cambodia’s own experience proved disputes should be resolved through dialogue, diplomacy and respect for international law.
