TOKYO, May 2, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s ambassador to Japan has formally written to Nikkei Asia disputing aspects of a recent article on the economic fallout from tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border, arguing the report presented an incomplete account of the territorial dispute.

In a letter dated June 1, the envoy responded to Nikkei Asia’s May 29 article “Thai‑Cambodia Border Clash Fallout Hits Japan Auto Industry.” While acknowledging the analysis of supply chain impacts, the ambassador said several elements relating to the territorial issue required clarification.

The letter objected to the description of the disputed location as “Nong Chan” in Thailand’s Sa Kaeo Province, insisting Cambodia regards the area as Chouk Chey Village in Malai District, Banteay Meanchey Province.

Referring to the site solely by its Thai designation, the envoy argued, risked giving readers an incomplete understanding and appeared to favour one side’s claim.

The ambassador also challenged the assertion that Thailand “effectively controls the area,” stressing that military presence does not determine sovereignty. Cambodia, the letter said, rejects territorial claims established through force or unilateral action.

According to the envoy, Cambodia lodged a formal protest on May 30 over what it described as continued violations of sovereignty, citing Thai military activities including road construction, permanent structures and religious installations.

The letter criticised the article for citing Thai military allegations without including Cambodia’s response or independent verification.

Reiterating Cambodia’s position, the ambassador said disputes must be resolved peacefully under international law, bilateral agreements and ASEAN principles.

The letter concluded by stressing the importance of accurate, balanced reporting to promote understanding and support efforts toward a lasting resolution.
