PHNOM PENH, June 3, 2026 (KPT) — Japan has reaffirmed support for Cambodia’s efforts to resolve its border dispute with Thailand peacefully, following talks in Phnom Penh aimed at strengthening bilateral defence cooperation.

Lieutenant General Rath Dararoth, Secretary of State at Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, met Hayashi Teiji, Japan’s Ambassador for Mekong Cooperation, on behalf of Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Tea Seiha.

The two sides discussed ways to deepen defence ties and promote the longstanding friendship between Cambodia and Japan.

Dararoth briefed the Japanese delegation on recent developments along the frontier and reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to resolving disputes through peaceful means in line with international law and existing agreements.

He also thanked Japan for its continued participation in observation missions organised by the Military Attaché Coordination Committee, which monitor compliance with the ceasefire.

Hayashi reaffirmed Japan’s support for efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution and restore normal relations between Cambodia and Thailand.

Ambassador Ueno Atsushi had earlier noted Japan’s assistance also supports mine clearance and disposal of unexploded ordnance along the border.

Japan has pledged nearly $20 million in emergency aid to civilians affected by the 2025 conflict, including returning workers and communities impacted by clashes.

Officials said Tokyo remains committed to promoting peace and stability in the region while helping restore livelihoods of affected populations.
