Cambodian Journalists question ABC border scam report over lack of territorial context

PHNOM PENH, June 30, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodian journalists have criticised Australia’s ABC News for failing to provide territorial context in its recent report on an alleged online scam compound near the Cambodia–Thailand border, warning that such omissions risk misleading audiences about sensitive disputes.

Puy Kea, president of the Club of Cambodian Journalists, told KPT English that the ABC video report titled Rare Look Inside Compound on Cambodia–Thailand Border did not explain that the site in Oddar Meanchey province lies in a contested area claimed by Cambodia. The footage was filmed after the Thai military granted access.

“Reporting on online scam operations is important, but journalists must also describe the political and geographical context of the locations they cover,” Kea said. “The issue is not the story itself, but the significance of the location.”

The ABC report, presented by Asia Editor Karishma Vyas, documented alleged evidence of cyber scam operations, including detention rooms and equipment used by criminal networks. But Cambodian analysts argued that allegations of scam activity have been used by Thailand to justify military actions in areas Cambodia considers sovereign territory.

Political analyst Kin Phea said such actions undermine Cambodia’s sovereignty and breach international law, while Yang Peou criticised Thailand’s decision to bring foreign military observers into disputed zones.

Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol also rejected suggestions that scam allegations could justify military intervention, stressing Cambodia’s right to investigate crimes within its territory.

The controversy highlights how reporting from disputed border areas can become entangled with wider political disagreements, prompting calls for fuller context in international coverage.
