Philippines reaffirms neutral ASEAN observer role during envoy’s farewell visit to Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, July 8, 2026 (KPT) — The Philippines has reaffirmed its commitment to continue serving as a neutral and impartial chair of the ASEAN Observer Team monitoring the ceasefire along the Cambodia–Thailand border, during a farewell meeting between outgoing ambassador Flerida Ann Camille P. Mayo and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn.

Cambodia’s foreign ministry said Mayo stressed Manila’s role as chair of the observer mission would remain neutral and impartial after being briefed on recent border developments.

Prak Sokhonn underlined the importance of the team’s work in ensuring stability and protecting civilians affected by tensions.

The meeting also underscored strong bilateral ties, with both sides pledging to deepen cooperation in defence and security, trade and investment, agriculture, tourism, education and people‑to‑people exchanges.

Prak Sokhonn congratulated Mayo on completing her posting, praising her efforts to strengthen relations and facilitate high‑level visits, including Prime Minister Hun Manet’s trip to Manila in February 2025 and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s state visit to Phnom Penh later that year.

He said he looked forward to co‑chairing the fifth Cambodia–Philippines Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation in 2027, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

Mayo highlighted Cambodia’s progress in diplomacy, tourism, infrastructure and digital transformation despite global challenges.

She thanked the Cambodian government and officials for their cooperation and support throughout her tenure, saying it had been an honour to serve in Phnom Penh and to contribute to advancing bilateral friendship.
