ASEAN Observers Visit Border Area Where Thai Barriers Block Cambodian Families from Returning

PHNOM PENH, June 23, 2026 (KPT) — Members of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) have inspected a border area in north‑western Cambodia where officials say Thai military barriers continue to prevent families from returning home.

The Defence Ministry said the visit took place Tuesday morning in Prey Chan village, O’Bei Choan commune, O’Chrov district, Banteay Meanchey province, and was facilitated by the Coordination Group. The delegation was led by the AOT Head of Mission from the Philippines.

Observers were tasked with verifying conditions on the ground and monitoring implementation of ceasefire measures agreed under the December 2025 Joint Statement of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee.

Cambodian authorities said the area had previously been subjected to attacks and the installation of barbed wire and container structures by Thai forces.

Government spokesman Pen Bona said more than 22,000 Cambodians displaced by the conflict remain unable to return home due to barriers erected by Thai forces.

The ministry reiterated Cambodia’s rejection of any border changes imposed by force and urged the Joint Boundary Commission to begin demarcation work “as soon as possible.”

Officials reaffirmed support for ASEAN observers and called for a stronger mandate to ensure transparency, accountability and confidence‑building between the two countries, stressing the need for lasting peace and stability along the frontier.
