PHNOM PENH, July 12, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s Ministry of Health on Sunday confirmed a case of avian influenza (H5N1) in a 10‑month‑old girl in Phnom Penh and urged the public to remain vigilant against the deadly virus.

The child, from Prek Tatan village in Chak Angre Leu commune, tested positive for the highly pathogenic strain on July 9, the ministry said. The diagnosis was verified by the National Institute of Public Health and the Institut Pasteur du Cambodge.

She has been admitted to hospital, placed in isolation and is receiving intensive care, according to the statement.

Rapid response teams are investigating the source of infection, tracing contacts and distributing the antiviral drug oseltamivir (Tamiflu). Awareness campaigns are also being conducted in the affected community.

The ministry warned that H5N1 continues to pose a public health risk, advising anyone with fever, cough, runny nose or breathing difficulties after contact with sick or dead poultry to seek medical attention immediately and avoid crowded places.

Human infections with H5N1 remain rare but can cause severe illness. Sustained human‑to‑human transmission is uncommon, though influenza viruses can evolve over time.\

Officials urged the public not to handle or consume sick or dead poultry, to cook meat and eggs thoroughly, practise good hygiene and avoid cross‑contamination when preparing food.

The ministry said it would continue to provide updates and reminded the public that further information is available via its free health hotline at 115.
