Cambodian Government Urges Media, Public to Protect Military Confidentiality Amid Security Concerns
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Aug. 23, 2025) — Government spokesman Pen Bona on Friday called on citizens and journalists to help safeguard national security by refraining from sharing sensitive military information online, warning that the pursuit of social media engagement could jeopardize the country’s defense efforts.

Speaking at a press conference in Phnom Penh, Pen said the public has a right to accurate information, but stressed that national security must take precedence, especially during times of heightened threat.
“Disclosing troop locations, base movements, weapons stockpiles or any classified military details is strictly prohibited,” Pen said. “This is not unique to Cambodia. Military secrecy and national security are protected rigorously in every country.”

The remarks follow a directive issued Aug. 1 by the Ministry of Information banning the publication of content related to troop deployments, military bases, armaments and strategic operations. The ministry emphasized that all reporting must avoid undermining national unity, troop morale or international relations.
“All information must be verified with official sources from national leadership, the government, the Ministry of National Defense and relevant institutions,” the ministry stated.
On Aug. 21, the ministry revoked the license of online outlet CCN-Daily, citing noncompliance with the directive. Officials warned that legal action may be taken against media organizations or individuals who fail to adhere to the guidelines.
