Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — A 102-year-old woman has successfully walked again just 48 hours after undergoing hip surgery at Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City in Malaysia.

Known affectionately as “Popo”, the patient was still active and independent before the injury. She was mentally alert and able to manage her daily life.

Following a fall at home, she was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with a neck of femur fracture — a serious condition for elderly patients that can lead to loss of mobility and rapid health decline.

Her case immediately triggered the hospital’s Fracture Liaison Service (FLS). Within hours, a team comprising orthopaedic surgeons, geriatricians, anaesthetists and rehabilitation specialists aligned on a treatment plan.

Leading the case was Dr Jeffrey Jaya Raj, an orthopaedic surgeon with extensive experience managing complex orthopaedic conditions, including fragility fractures, alongside geriatrician (Dr Teh Hoon Lang), anaesthetist (Dr Lai Hou Yee) and rehabilitation specialists.

Within 24 hours of admission, Dr Jeffrey performed a bipolar hemiarthroplasty and completed the procedure within an hour under regional and spinal anaesthesia to lower the risk of complications.

The patient was able to stand the next day and began walking with support within 48 hours.

At 102, she is the oldest patient to undergo surgery at Sunway Medical Centre and is believed to be among the oldest hip surgery patients in Southeast Asia.

Doctors emphasised that the success of the procedure was not due to surgery alone. Equally important was the patient’s strong family support. Surrounded by children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she received constant encouragement throughout her recovery.

“If I can walk, I want to do it,” she told her family.
