PHNOM PENH, Feb 27, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has reaffirmed its firm stance on defending the Cambodia–Thailand border, citing boundaries established by the Franco–Siamese Boundary Commission.

Government spokesperson Pen Bona told reporters Friday that Cambodia’s position rests on international law and the principle of the inviolability of borders, known as uti possidetis juris.

He stressed the government does not recognise any border changes resulting from the use of force.

Bona voiced strong backing for the ASEAN Observer Team, calling its role “indispensable” in verifying and ensuring compliance with the ceasefire agreed on Dec 27, 2025.

He said the observers’ presence promotes transparency, accountability and trust, aimed at restoring stability along the frontier.

Ambassadors, international organisations and ASEAN observers have conducted continuous inspections, while Prime Minister Hun Manet’s diplomatic engagements abroad underscore Cambodia’s commitment to sovereignty and citizens’ protection.

Bona said Cambodia had provided the international community with a “clear and comprehensive understanding” of alleged Thai incursions, while pursuing a peaceful resolution through agreed mechanisms.

On Feb 26, the ASEAN Observer Team visited Preah Vihear Temple and nearby villages, inspecting civilian sites damaged in December clashes.

Days earlier, on Feb 23, foreign envoys toured Banteay Meanchey province, where Cambodia alleges Thai troops occupied territory and restricted residents’ access with containers and barbed wire.
