Cambodia Highlights Human Rights Gains at UN Council

PHNOM PENH, Feb 27, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has showcased its human rights progress at the United Nations Human Rights Council, citing post-conflict recovery and nearly three decades of stability as foundations for governance, social development and international cooperation.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn addressed the council’s 61st session in Geneva on Feb 24, warning that global human rights mechanisms face strain from armed conflicts, geopolitical divisions and unilateral actions.
He stressed the link between human rights, peace and security, and called for respect of sovereignty and international law.
Drawing on Cambodia’s reconciliation process and the “win-win policy” of Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Prak Sokhonn said stability had enabled poverty reduction, near-universal primary education, stronger health and social protection systems, and greater participation of women in leadership and UN peacekeeping.
He cited reforms against domestic violence, human trafficking and labour exploitation, alongside improvements in civil and political rights and engagement with civil society.
Cambodia also continues mine-clearance efforts, aiming to eliminate landmine impacts by 2030 while assisting other countries in demining and training.
The minister highlighted government measures against transnational crimes, including online scams and trafficking, positioning Cambodia as a post-conflict nation contributing to human rights and security at home and abroad.
