Cambodia urges respect for sovereignty at Francophonie meeting

PHNOM PENH, 13 February 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has urged respect for its sovereignty and international law in response to alleged Thai military violations along the border, despite a ceasefire agreed in December.

Ambassador Ly Davit raised the issue at the 257th meeting of the Political Committee of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie in France on 11 February.

He said Thai forces continued to destroy homes, loot property and erect fortifications, obstructing the safe return of displaced civilians.

Davit recalled that Thailand’s attacks had involved heavy weapons, drones and combat aircraft, causing civilian casualties and damaging cultural heritage sites including Preah Vihear, Ta Krabei and Ta Muen Thom temples.

He stressed these sites lie on Cambodian territory defined by Franco Siamese treaties and confirmed by International Court of Justice rulings.

He reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to the ceasefire, welcomed ASEAN observers’ role and urged Thailand to remove unauthorized structures.

He called on the Francophone community to monitor the situation and support a peaceful resolution.

“Borders cannot be determined by force,” he said. “Peace and stability can only be ensured through respect for international law and state sovereignty.”
