ADB, UNICEF Back Cambodia’s Rural WASH Plan to Reach 100% Coverage by 2030
PHNOM PENH, Feb 11, 2026 (KPT) – The Asian Development Bank and UNICEF have pledged support for Cambodia’s new rural water, sanitation and hygiene plan, which aims to achieve universal coverage by 2030.
The commitment was highlighted at a workshop chaired by Rural Development Minister Chhay Rithisen, with participation from development partners, NGOs and officials from all 25 provinces.
Cambodia has already made progress, with basic rural water supply at 89 percent and sanitation at 95 percent by 2025, while all provinces have achieved open defecation-free status. Safely managed services remain limited, however, with water at 25 percent and sanitation at 51 percent.
The new plan sets targets of 100 percent basic coverage by 2030, raising safely managed water to 50 percent and sanitation to 70 percent by 2033, and advancing toward ODF+ standards.
Officials said the strategy is anchored in national priorities and, with ADB and UNICEF backing, will help deliver healthier communities and more resilient rural livelihoods.
