Cambodian Analysts Urge Caution Over Trump’s “Peace Board” Invitation

PHNOM PENH, Jan 22, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodian analysts have urged caution over an invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump to join a newly formed “Board of Peace,” while welcoming Washington’s broader push for global peace.
The government confirmed receipt of the invitation, signaling Phnom Penh’s possible involvement in an international initiative aimed at ending the Gaza conflict and supporting post-war stabilisation.
Invitation Seen as Honor, But Risks Loom
Yang Peou, a Cambodian political analyst, called the invitation an honor, noting it reflects Cambodia’s reputation for peacebuilding after decades of conflict.
“On behalf of Cambodian citizens, we appreciate the efforts of major powers that are working to bring peace to the world,” he said.
But Peou warned that recognition should not mean automatic alignment. In a multipolar world, he said, Cambodia must remain cautious and avoid falling under the influence of any single power.
UN Still the Cornerstone of Global Peace
Peou stressed that the United Nations remains the most legitimate forum for resolving conflicts, citing the authority of the Security Council’s five permanent members.
“This mechanism is still resilient, strong, and widely trusted by the international community,” he said.
As a small state, Cambodia depends on international law, multilateral institutions and balanced diplomacy, he added. Joining Trump’s board, he said, requires “proper consideration” rather than outright rejection or acceptance.

Analysts Suggest Observer Role, ASEAN Unity
Thong Mengdavid, a lecturer at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, echoed calls for caution, suggesting Cambodia join only as an observer or through informal engagement.
He said participation should be conditional on transparency, inclusiveness and alignment with ASEAN and UN frameworks.
“Cambodia should coordinate closely with its ASEAN partners to avoid unilateral positions,” he said, adding the board should focus on humanitarian issues and confidence-building rather than binding security commitments.
Government Welcomes Invitation
Government spokesman Pen Bona described the invitation as “an honor for Cambodia.”
“Although Cambodia is a small country, the world thinks of Cambodia when talking about peace,” he said. “Peace is regarded by the Cambodian people as a fundamental principle, essential not only for Cambodia but also for the region and the world.”
Peace Board Rooted in Gaza Plan
The White House formally invited Cambodia as part of efforts to enlist Asian partners in peace initiatives. In a January 16 letter to Prime Minister Hun Manet, Trump outlined plans for the “Board of Peace,” tasked with overseeing Gaza’s stabilisation and reconstruction.

The initiative stems from a 20-point Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict, unveiled in September 2025 and endorsed by the UN Security Council in November.
It includes security guarantees, humanitarian access, reconstruction funding and transitional governance.
Balancing Recognition With Neutrality
Analysts say Cambodia’s challenge is to balance international recognition with strategic neutrality.
The invitation underscores Phnom Penh’s peace-oriented reputation, but its decision will test Cambodia’s ability to navigate global politics without compromising its commitment to multilateralism and non-alignment.
