Cambodia opens rural science library to boost STEM education
BATTAMBANG, Jan 18, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia has inaugurated a new science library in Battambang province aimed at strengthening STEM education in rural areas and supporting the country’s long-term development goals under its 2050 vision.
The facility at Hun Sen Treng High School in Ratanak Mondul district was opened on January 17 through a collaboration between the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation (MISTI) and the Indian Embassy in Phnom Penh.

Funded by India under a Quick Impact Project within the Mekong–Ganga Cooperation framework, the library will give students in the remote district greater access to modern scientific resources.
MISTI Minister Hem Vanndy said investing in human capital was vital as Cambodia moves toward a digital and innovation-driven future, describing the library as a “warm second home” for curious students. He urged them to use the facility to become the “cream of the crop” of a new generation contributing to the country’s economic and technological progress.
Equipped with solar-powered air-conditioning, scientific equipment for practical learning, and a water purification system donated by the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority, the library is designed to be both environmentally sustainable and conducive to study.
Indian Ambassador Shri Vanlalvawna Bawitlung said the project reflected the strong partnership between the two countries, noting that science education was essential to sustainable development. He added the library would encourage students to experiment, ask questions and develop critical thinking skills.
Alongside the inauguration, MISTI and the Indian Embassy signed an agreement to build a second science library in Sangke district. Cambodia has so far received support for 66 Quick Impact Projects under India’s Act East policy, of which 47 have been completed.
The new Battambang library is expected to benefit around 1,500 students and contribute to Cambodia’s broader vision of building a skilled STEM workforce capable of driving growth in the era of Industry 4.0.
