US Pushes for Cambodia-Thailand Ceasefire, Government Spokesman Says

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec.26,2025) — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet spoke by telephone with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Dec. 25 to discuss developments along the Cambodia-Thailand border, government spokesman Pen Bona said Friday.
Bona said the conversation focused on promoting an immediate ceasefire and implementing existing peace agreements to achieve long-term stability between the two neighbors.
He emphasized that the United States wants “stable and lasting peace” between Cambodia and Thailand and is actively working to encourage a ceasefire. Hun Manet reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to the Kuala Lumpur Joint Statement and other agreements, stressing that Phnom Penh remains focused on peacefully resolving border issues.
Bona highlighted the impact of the clashes on Cambodian civilians and infrastructure. He said at least 30 civilians have been killed and 88 injured, including children, women and the elderly, while more than 640,000 people have been displaced.
Civilian infrastructure — including homes, roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, pagodas, markets, statues and ancient temples — has also been damaged, he added.
He said international attention on Cambodia’s plight shows the global community is not indifferent to what he described as “indiscriminate attacks” by Thai forces.
Bona also noted that diplomatic efforts, along with calls for peace from monks, civil servants, civil society organizations and citizens, are drawing worldwide attention and reinforcing Cambodia’s position that justice must prevail.
The Cambodian government reiterated its commitment to resolving the border dispute through dialogue and in accordance with international law and existing agreements.
