Analysts Warn of Humanitarian Tragedy, Urge Independent Verification as Cambodia–Thailand Border Fighting Escalates
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 17, 2025) — Analysts are warning that the escalating border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand has become a humanitarian tragedy, urging de escalation and independent verification to protect civilians and uphold international law.

Kin Phea, a Cambodian political science analyst, said the fighting has caused significant loss of life on both sides and left deep social and emotional scars.
He described the conflict as an unjustified war of invasion, accusing Thailand of violating Cambodia’s sovereignty and breaching a ceasefire agreement witnessed by the international community.
“The conflict has brought grieving families and widespread suffering,” Phea said, calling for condolences to victims regardless of nationality. He warned that continued hostilities risk undermining bilateral peace and regional stability, and urged an immediate end to the fighting.
Separately, American analyst Arnaud Darc said Cambodia’s call for independent verification of events along the border aligns with international law and established monitoring practices.
He argued that third party verification, including satellite imagery, strengthens transparency and credibility when opposing narratives emerge.
Darc cautioned that refusal to accept verification does not automatically prove misconduct, but combined with sustained military action could damage a state’s credibility.
He stressed that civilians are bearing the brunt of the conflict and called for de escalation, accountability and respect for humanitarian law.
“Truth is established through evidence, verification and accountability,” Darc said.
