France Backs Anwar’s Call for Ceasefire Between Thailand and Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 15, 2025) — France has voiced support for Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s call for an immediate ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia amid escalating border clashes.

In a statement, France urged both sides to halt hostilities without delay and return to dialogue in line with the Kuala Lumpur Peace Declaration. Paris also praised Malaysia’s role as ASEAN chair in facilitating talks and stressed the need for a diplomatic solution to bring the conflict to a peaceful resolution.

Anwar announced Saturday that Malaysia had proposed a ceasefire to take effect at 10 p.m., with an ASEAN Observer Team deploying alongside satellite monitoring provided by the United States.

He said the truce would require both sides to halt all hostilities, including the use of force and forward movement of armed units. Monitoring would be supported by U.S. satellite imagery, with findings presented at an ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on Dec. 16.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet welcomed the initiative, saying Cambodia supported the ceasefire and its verification by ASEAN observers and U.S. monitoring.

The push for peace follows direct calls by U.S. President Donald Trump to both Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. Trump urged the leaders to honor the Kuala Lumpur Declaration and recommit to dialogue, framing the ceasefire as essential to regional stability and civilian protection.
