PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Oct.20, 2025) — Prime Minister Hun Manet said on Monday that the land of the former Phnom Penh International Airport will remain under state ownership and be transformed into a public park, following the inauguration of the new Techo International Airport.

Speaking at the official opening of Techo International Airport on Oct. 20, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet addressed public concerns and opposition criticism over the future of the old airport site.

“All of the land belonging to the old Phnom Penh International Airport is state property,” Samdech Thipadei said. “It is not for sale and will not be handed over to any private company.”

He announced that the site will be redeveloped into a large public park and recreational space for residents of the capital, while retaining its function as an emergency landing facility. The transformation is expected to be completed by early 2026.

The government will allocate approximately $3 million annually for the care and maintenance of the grounds, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said, adding that the space is intended to become a peaceful destination for public relaxation.

The prime minister also warned against attempts to produce or circulate fraudulent documents to claim or sell parts of the land.

“As long as I lead the government, the old airport will not come under the control of any private company,” he said.

Phnom Penh International Airport, formerly known as Pochentong International Airport, operated for nearly 70 years before closing at midnight on Sept. 9, 2025.

The facility, located on more than 400 hectares in Por Sen Chey District, was Cambodia’s first international airport, inaugurated in January 1959.
