Cambodian Expert Says Thai PM Shows No Will to Resolve Border Dispute
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Oct. 17, 2025) — Cambodian political analysts has criticized Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul for lacking a clear strategy to resolve ongoing border tensions with Cambodia, accusing his administration of siding with military and nationalist interests over diplomatic solutions.

Anutin, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, was elected prime minister on Sept. 5 with support from the People’s Party and sworn in by King Vajiralongkorn two days later. Since taking office, he has yet to outline a policy addressing the long-standing border dispute.
“Anutin has shown no roadmap or purpose in solving the border issue,” said Yang Peou, secretary-general of the Royal Academy of Cambodia. “His government has not implemented terms of the ceasefire or agreements made during recent bilateral meetings.”
Peou said Anutin has deferred border affairs to the Thai military and expressed support for provocative acts by Thai nationalists, including a YouTuber who played aggressive soundtracks along the border—actions Cambodia claims violate international law.
Peou argued that Anutin’s government lacks independence and is driven more by political survival than diplomacy.
Despite concerns, Peou urged Cambodia to remain committed to peaceful resolution through international law and treaty obligations.
Deth Sok Udom, a professor at Paragon International University, echoed the view, saying Anutin’s priority is maintaining power rather than resolving the dispute.
Both analysts said progress is unlikely without a shift in Bangkok’s political priorities.
