Cambodian Scholar Urges Caution in Interpreting Murder of South Korean Student

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Oct.16, 2025) — A leading Cambodian scholar on Thursday cautioned against speculative interpretations of the murder of a South Korean student in Kampot province, warning that personal opinions could strain diplomatic relations and misrepresent the incident.

Yang Peou, secretary-general of the Royal Academy of Cambodia, urged the public and commentators to allow authorities to investigate the case in accordance with legal and international norms.

“The matter should be clarified by competent authorities in accordance with legal, diplomatic, and international principles,” Yang said. “There should not be interpretations based on personal viewpoints that may lead to misunderstandings involving networks, institutions, or friendly countries.”

The student was allegedly killed by foreign nationals linked to online criminal activity. Authorities are continuing their investigation.

Yang described the case as a tragic but isolated incident, cautioning against turning it into a geopolitical issue. He acknowledged international criticism and concerns that Cambodia may be perceived as a hub for transnational crime, but emphasized that similar crimes occur elsewhere.

He said the Cambodian government has responded responsibly and urged analysts not to associate the country with specific criminal networks or nations, warning that such assumptions could heighten regional tensions.
