Cambodia Reaffirms Commitment to Protecting Border With Thailand

PHNOM PENH, March 16, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has reaffirmed its firm position on safeguarding the country’s border with Thailand, stressing that its claims are based on agreements established by the Indochina–Siam Boundary Commission.
Government spokesman Pen Bona told reporters Monday that Cambodia continues to adhere to international law, including the principle of uti possidetis juris, which upholds the inviolability of inherited borders.
He cited Franco–Siamese conventions, treaties, maps and demarcation records accepted by both sides, adding that Cambodia rejects any attempt to alter the frontier through force.
Bona recalled Cambodia’s difficult history during civil war and the Pol Pot regime, saying current challenges should strengthen national unity and patriotism.
He referred to Prime Minister Hun Manet’s recent remarks urging citizens to remain confident in the government and committed to defending sovereignty through peaceful means.
Officials said Cambodia’s strength lies in the unity of its people, the bravery of soldiers on the front lines, and diplomatic efforts grounded in international law.
