Cambodia reiterates commitment to border peace agreements with Thailand

PHNOM PENH, Mar. 25, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and stability along its border with Thailand, government spokesman Pen Bona said Wednesday.
At a press briefing, Bona recalled the joint statement from the third Special Meeting of the General Border Committee in December 2025, which emphasized dialogue, trust and adherence to ASEAN and UN principles.
He also cited the ASEAN Chair’s Statement from the Special Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Kuala Lumpur that same month.
Bona stressed Cambodia’s determination to fully implement the ceasefire agreed on July 28, 2025, and all related accords. He said both sides were committed to resuming dialogue through bilateral mechanisms to end hostilities and achieve lasting peace.
Cambodia, he added, maintains a firm position on safeguarding its internationally recognized boundary, based on Franco Siamese treaties and the principle of uti possidetis juris. Phnom Penh, he said, will not recognize any border changes imposed by force.
On March 24, Defence Ministry spokesperson Lieutenant General Maly Socheata dismissed the reports as “incorrect and baseless,” saying the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces remain under government orders to maintain stability along the frontier.
She cited Cambodia’s adherence to bilateral agreements, including the Joint Statement from the Special General Border Committee on December 27, 2025, and the Joint Declaration on Peace signed October 26, 2025.
Cambodia’s position reflects its determination to safeguard sovereignty while resolving disputes peacefully through bilateral mechanisms and confidence building measures.
The Foreign Ministry earlier lodged a formal protest against Thailand, accusing its forces of violating Cambodian sovereignty despite a ceasefire signed late last year.
