PHNOM PENH, April 1, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia marked the International Day of La Francophonie with a reception highlighting youth contributions to global peace, as the capital prepares to host the 20th Francophonie Summit in November.

Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn led the gathering at the Rosewood Phnom Penh, joined by senior officials, legislators, foreign diplomats, French ambassador Olivier Richard, and some 200 representatives from Francophone public and private sectors.

The event also commemorated the founding of the International Organization of La Francophonie, established on 20 March 1970 in Niamey, Niger.

The foreign ministry confirmed the biennial summit will be relocated from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh to ensure “optimal conditions” for plenary sessions and side events.

Leaders and representatives from OIF member states and partner institutions are expected to focus on global challenges of peace and sustainable development.

French President Emmanuel Macron will attend, following diplomatic discussions between Senate President Hun Sen and Ambassador Richard.

Cambodia joined the Francophonie in 1991 and became a full member in 1993. The organization now counts 90 states and governments.

The November summit will be a landmark opportunity for Cambodia to showcase its role in Francophone diplomacy and reinforce international collaboration on peace and sustainable development.
