Cambodian PM raises border issue with Macron, insists on international law

PHNOM PENH, April 10, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has raised concerns over alleged border violations by Thai forces during talks in Paris with French President Emmanuel Macron, stressing Cambodia’s firm stance on resolving disputes under international law, according to Minister Delegate Jean-François Tain.
Speaking at a press briefing on April 9, Tain said Hun Manet described what he called “illegal encroachment” into Cambodian territory along the frontier with Thailand.
The prime minister reportedly told Macron that Cambodia’s position was to “publicise the situation without exaggeration or minimisation,” while maintaining respect for international law.
Tain alleged that tensions had escalated following previous clashes, with claims that Thai military forces had moved beyond recognised boundary lines.
He said homes were destroyed, residents displaced, and infrastructure such as roads built in disputed areas.
Hun Manet was quoted as telling Macron that Cambodia rejects any unilateral changes to border demarcations, insisting disputed areas remain legally Cambodian under international law.
Phnom Penh, he added, continues to view the matter as one to be resolved through treaties and agreed legal frameworks.
Despite the allegations, Tain said the government remains committed to a peaceful settlement, relying on international law, existing agreements, and regional mechanisms.
He noted that Hun Manet told Macron Cambodia was not asking France to take sides, but to uphold principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Tain added that mediation efforts involving the United States, China, and ASEAN had contributed to ceasefires reached in 2025.
