Cambodia Closely Monitors Thai Activities, Reaffirms Sovereignty Along Border

PHNOM PENH, April 20, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia is closely monitoring Thai military activities in areas it says were illegally occupied during clashes in December 2025, while maintaining formal diplomatic protests against what it describes as violations of sovereignty, government spokesperson Pen Bona said Monday.

Authorities highlighted developments in Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey and Pursat provinces, where Thai troops were reported to have reinforced positions through construction of observation posts, roads, trenches and land clearing.

The foreign ministry lodged its latest protest on April 18, objecting to what it called continued military activities infringing on territorial integrity.

Phnom Penh said such actions contravene international commitments, including the UN Charter, ASEAN Charter and Treaty of Amity and Cooperation, and rejected Thai claims of self defense linked to a border committee meeting in December.

The government reiterated it does not recognize unilateral border claims and stressed recent activities do not alter Cambodia’s legal position.

Officials underscored adherence to historical agreements and international law, insisting borders cannot be changed by force.
