SVAY RIENG, April 30, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s Labour Minister Heng Sour hailed workers as the “backbone of society” on Wednesday, reaffirming government commitments to decent work, improved livelihoods and expanded social protection.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the 140th anniversary of International Labour Day, Sour described workers as “true heroes of families, society and the nation,” underscoring their role in driving economic growth and household welfare. The event, held at the Svay Rieng Special Economic Zone, gathered about 1,600 participants under the theme “Building Resilience Together for Decent Work.”

Sour said the theme reflects Cambodia’s push to build a resilient labour market through stronger rights protection, safer workplaces, better wages and enhanced social dialogue. He highlighted Svay Rieng’s emergence as an industrial hub attracting investment and creating jobs, including opportunities for returning migrant workers.

The minister pointed to ongoing initiatives to expand healthcare coverage under the National Social Security Fund, cash support for pregnant women and young children, and free vocational training for vulnerable youth.

He urged employers, unions and workers to strengthen workplace safety and maintain harmonious relations, stressing that enterprises should be seen as spaces of mutual benefit.

Sour also called for unity and trust in government leadership, saying social stability is essential to sustain economic growth and national development.
