PM Urges Stronger Media Governance, Crackdown on Fake News
PHNOM PENH, May 3, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet on Saturday called for tougher media governance and a more robust crackdown on misinformation as the country marked World Press Freedom Day.
In a message to the Ministry of Information, Samdech ThipadeiHun Manet outlined five recommendations to strengthen the sector while safeguarding public trust. He urged authorities to advance legal frameworks to reinforce order and information security, alongside efforts to improve the professional capacity and legal awareness of registered journalists.

The premier also stressed the importance of “media diplomacy” to connect Cambodian journalists with regional and global peers, reflecting a push for greater international engagement.
At the same time, he called for faster responses to misinformation and stricter enforcement against individuals misusing journalism to commit unlawful acts such as extortion.
Samdech ThipadeiHun Manet further emphasized the need for regular assessments of the media and audiovisual sectors to better reflect the realities faced by journalists and operators on the ground.
