Cambodia, EU Lawmakers Pledge Deeper Ties at Inter Parliamentary Meeting

PHNOM PENH, May 5, 2026 (KPT) — Lawmakers from Cambodia and the European Union have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening political and economic ties following talks at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the National Assembly said Tuesday.
The two day meeting, held April 28–29, brought together a Cambodian delegation led by Sous Yara and members of the European Parliament for the 5th Cambodia–EU Inter Parliamentary Meeting.
The talks were co chaired by Yara and Wouter Beke, with approval from National Assembly President Khuon Sudary.
Both sides underscored the importance of Cambodia–EU relations, particularly in trade, development cooperation and regional stability.
The EU described Cambodia as a “valued partner” within ASEAN and reaffirmed support for its socio economic development, including green energy and infrastructure projects under its Global Gateway strategy.
Cambodian lawmakers welcomed EU assistance, including post pandemic financial support and humanitarian aid.
Sensitive issues such as human rights and regional security were also raised, with European lawmakers urging peaceful resolution of Cambodia–Thailand border tensions in line with international law.
Trade featured prominently, with bilateral exchanges exceeding $5.8 billion in 2025. Both sides pledged to expand investment and prepare for Cambodia’s planned graduation from least developed country status in 2029.
The meeting also addressed online scams, with the EU praising Cambodia’s enforcement of laws targeting technology based fraud.
It was the first time the inter parliamentary dialogue had been hosted at the European Parliament. The next round of talks is expected to take place in Cambodia.
