Governor Tells UN Official Border Clashes with Thailand Caused Civilian Deaths, Displacement

PHNOM PENH, May 6, 2026 (KPT) — Banteay Meanchey provincial governor told a UN official that recent border clashes with Thailand resulted in civilian deaths, injuries and widespread displacement.
Oum Reatrey, governor of Banteay Meanchey, made the remarks during a meeting with Matilda Bogner, country representative of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, on Wednesday.
He said what he described as incursions by Thai forces had left nine civilians dead and 77 injured, while more than 2,000 homes were reported damaged.
Reatrey alleged that houses and farmland along the frontier had been destroyed, leaving many residents without shelter.
He added that unexploded ordnance, including cluster munitions, remained scattered across several districts despite a ceasefire agreed late last year.
The governor said displaced families had been relocated to temporary sites, including a veterans’ community area in Slakram commune, where each household has been allocated land and basic infrastructure such as roads, electricity, schools and health centres.
Bogner expressed condolences over the reported loss of life and injuries, and visited displaced communities during her trip.
Officials said some residents remain unable to return home because border areas are still inaccessible despite the ceasefire.
