Cambodia Condemns Thailand’s Registration of Temples

PHNOM PENH, May 13, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts has strongly protested Thailand’s decision to register several ancient temples and archaeological sites claimed by Cambodia as part of Thailand’s national list of monuments.

In a statement, the ministry said it “firmly rejects” the move by Thailand’s Fine Arts Department to include the Tamone Temple Complex, Ta Krabey Temple, K’nar Temple and other sites located within Cambodian territory.

The ministry described the registration as “illegal, null and without legal effect,” stressing it could not serve as evidence of sovereignty or border delimitation. It said boundary issues must be resolved under international law, including the 1907 Franco‑Siamese Treaty and related agreements.

The statement cited bilateral mechanisms such as the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding, the 2003 Terms of Reference and the Joint Boundary Commission, accusing Thailand of creating “an artificial legal appearance” over cultural sites.

Cambodia said the move violated its sovereignty and undermined peaceful dialogue, urging Thailand to withdraw the registration and refrain from unilateral actions. Phnom Penh reaffirmed its commitment to resolving disputes peacefully in line with international law and existing agreements.
