PHNOM PENH, May 15, 2026 (KPT) – Construction of Phase III of the Bakheng Water Treatment Plant, Cambodia’s largest water facility, has reached 72% completion, the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation said Friday.

Industry Minister Hem Vanndy led an inspection visit to the site, where officials confirmed the expansion is on track to become fully operational by the second quarter of 2027. The new phase will add 195,000 cubic meters per day of production capacity, raising the Bakheng plant’s total to 585,000 cubic meters daily.

The project will also lift the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority’s overall capacity to about 1.2 million cubic meters per day, strengthening clean water coverage across the capital and surrounding areas. Officials said the expansion is critical to meeting rising urban demand driven by rapid economic growth and population expansion.

The ministry added that the project will support long‑term urban development while improving public access to safe and reliable clean water services.
