PHNOM PENH, May 18, 2026 (KPT) — An ASEAN observer mission has visited a disputed border area between Cambodia and Thailand to assess compliance with a ceasefire agreement reached last year, Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence said Sunday.

Ministry spokeswoman Lt Gen Maly Socheata said the mission was conducted in coordination with Cambodia’s Liaison Group and the ASEAN Observer Team, led by the Philippines.

The delegation visited Seila Khmer village in Banteay Meanchey province to “observe, verify and report” on the situation.

Officials said the area has long been cultivated and administered by Cambodian citizens and has remained under Phnom Penh’s control since the ceasefire took effect on December 27, 2025.

The mission also reviewed stabilisation measures agreed under a joint declaration signed after the truce.

The government reiterated that border survey and demarcation work falls solely under the authority of the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC).

It rejected “any alteration” of the international boundary that contradicts Franco‑Siamese treaties, official maps or bilateral agreements, including the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding.

Cambodia urged Thailand to resume joint survey operations and convene a new JBC meeting, stressing its commitment to peace and stability along the frontier.
