Cambodia Praises U.S. Role in Border Mediation During Talks with DeSombre

NEW YORK, May 27, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s foreign minister has praised U.S. diplomatic support in efforts to resolve the border conflict with Thailand, highlighting the role played by President Donald Trump in brokering peace.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn met U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Michael George DeSombre on May 26, reviewing outcomes of DeSombre’s visit to Phnom Penh earlier this year.
Both sides described the talks as productive and reaffirmed cooperation across regional issues.
Prak Sokhonn expressed appreciation for what he called Washington’s proactive role under Trump in supporting mediation efforts and the implementation of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords.
On October 26, 2025, Trump presided over the signing of a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, declaring it a “great Peace Deal” and a step toward regional stability.
The U.S. president praised Cambodian and Thai leaders for preventing further conflict and underscored his administration’s ability to settle international disputes.
Cambodian officials say the accord helped ease tensions along the frontier, where clashes had displaced hundreds of thousands and left families blocked from returning home due to Thai military installations of barbed wire and shipping containers inside Cambodian territory.
Prak Sokhonn said Cambodia remains committed to peaceful settlement of disputes and welcomed continued U.S. engagement in supporting regional stability.
