Thai Product Boycott Creates Opportunity for Cambodian Brands and Local Manufacturing
PHNOM PENH, May 29, 2026 (KPT) — Growing public support for boycotting Thai products is opening new opportunities for Cambodian brands and domestic manufacturers to expand their market presence, officials said Friday.
Commerce Ministry spokesman Pen Sovicheat said the shift in consumer behavior offers a valuable chance for Cambodian enterprises to strengthen competitiveness. “When our people boycott Thai products, this becomes one of the best opportunities for local industries to grow,” he said, urging manufacturers to seize the momentum.

Local producers have already moved to fill gaps left by Thai imports, particularly in the food sector, with Cambodian brands offering a wider range of products tailored to consumer demand.
Te Taingpor, president of the Federation of Associations for Small and Medium Enterprises of Cambodia, said demand for Cambodian‑made goods has risen by about 30 percent since the boycott campaign began.
He cautioned, however, that sustaining growth will require stronger product standards, competitive pricing, stable supply chains, innovation and better branding. Economist Ky Sereyvath added that government support is needed to improve quality, simplify licensing and ensure access to raw materials.
The trend reflects broader efforts to boost domestic manufacturing as part of Cambodia’s industrial strategy. Official data showed bilateral trade with Thailand fell sharply in the first four months of 2026, totaling just over US$925 million — down 38.1 percent year‑on‑year. Exports dropped 28 percent to US$235 million, while imports fell 40.8 percent to US$690 million.
