PHNOM PENH, June 5, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia and China have deepened economic cooperation with the signing of a Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) for their Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) programs, a move expected to streamline customs procedures, lower trade costs, and enhance supply chain security, officials said Thursday.

The agreement was signed by Dr. Kun Nhem, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister and Director General of the General Department of Customs and Excise of Cambodia, and Sun Meijun, Minister of the General Administration of Customs of China.

Under the Cambodia-China AEO MRA, companies certified as highly compliant and trusted traders in either country will benefit from simplified customs procedures, including fewer physical inspections and faster clearance of goods.

Cambodian customs officials said the arrangement will ease administrative burdens and facilitate smoother movement of goods between the two countries. Cambodia currently has 11 AEO-certified companies and aims to expand that number to 30 by the end of 2026, reflecting government efforts to boost compliance and competitiveness among exporters.

Officials described the agreement as strategically important for strengthening bilateral trade and investment, helping businesses reduce costs and transit times while reinforcing supply chain resilience and security.

The signing ceremony also underscored the close relationship between Cambodia and China, which both sides describe as an “Ironclad Friendship” and a comprehensive strategic partnership. The initiative aligns with efforts to advance the Cambodia-China Community with a Shared Future in the New Era.

China remains Cambodia’s largest trading partner and leading source of foreign direct investment, playing a key role in supporting the country’s economic growth and infrastructure development.
