Putin Describes Cambodia as Russia’s Long‑Standing Friend, Pledges Stronger Bilateral Ties

KAZAN, Russia, June 19, 2026 (KPT) — Russian President Vladimir Putin has described Cambodia as a “long‑standing friend and partner,” reaffirming Moscow’s commitment to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors for the mutual benefit of both countries.
Putin made the remarks during talks with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on the sidelines of a regional summit in Kazan.
“Cambodia is our long‑standing friend and partner. This May, we marked the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations,” he said.
He recalled Soviet support for Cambodia’s state‑building efforts, including the construction of a hospital and a technological institute, as well as infrastructure in energy, agriculture, telecommunications and transport. Many of these facilities, he noted, continue to serve Cambodians today.
Putin highlighted growing economic ties, citing a 2 percent rise in bilateral trade last year, though he acknowledged the figure remained modest. He said both governments were working to intensify trade and investment, with Russian firms exploring opportunities in Cambodia.
The Russian leader welcomed Cambodia’s participation in the St Petersburg International Economic Forum earlier this month and invited Cambodian businesses to upcoming events in Vladivostok and Moscow.
He also pointed to expanding cultural and educational exchanges, noting more than 8,000 Cambodians have graduated from Russian universities, with 160 currently studying in Russia.
“We have long‑standing relations. The scope of our cooperation is expanding, and we are very pleased about this,” Putin said.
