Cambodian NA president congratulates new South Korean speaker, cites push for stronger parliamentary ties

PHNOM PENH, June 22, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s National Assembly president Samdech Khuon Sudary has congratulated Cho Jeong-sik on his election as speaker of South Korea’s National Assembly, voicing confidence that relations between the two legislatures will deepen under his tenure.
In a message issued after Cho’s election on June 5, Sudary offered her “warmest congratulations and felicitations” and said she believed the South Korean parliament would achieve new milestones under his leadership.
She stressed the importance of expanding cooperation through bilateral and multilateral mechanisms, adding that she looked forward to working closely with Cho to promote peace, prosperity and a rules‑based international order.
Cho, a six‑term lawmaker from the ruling Democratic Party, won the speakership with 267 votes and will serve until May 2028. By convention, the post requires political neutrality.
Cambodia and South Korea elevated ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2024, with parliamentary diplomacy seen as a key pillar alongside trade, investment and cultural exchanges.
Sudary’s message comes as both countries seek to broaden cooperation through regional forums.
