Toyota’s Cambodia Expansion Sends Strong Signal of Investor Confidence, Japan Says
PHNOM PENH, July 3, 2026 (KPT)— Japan’s ambassador to Cambodia said Toyota’s latest manufacturing expansion demonstrates that the Kingdom remains a safe and attractive investment destination, despite recent challenges that have affected investor confidence.
Speaking at the launch of Toyota Tsusho Manufacturing (Cambodia)’s new Hilux Travo assembly line at the Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone, Ambassador Ueno Atsushi said the automaker’s continued growth sends a powerful message to international investors about Cambodia’s long‑term potential.

He acknowledged that border tensions with Thailand and online scam‑related issues had caused caution among some foreign investors, but stressed that Toyota’s success in vehicle sales and human resource development enhances Cambodia’s image.
“At a time when investor confidence has declined, the fact that Toyota is successfully operating a plant here will greatly strengthen Cambodia’s reputation as an investment destination,” he said.
Ueno added that Japan has maintained confidence in Cambodia throughout these challenges, with Toyota’s expansion serving as tangible evidence of that trust. He pledged continued embassy support for greater Japanese investment and expressed hope that locally assembled vehicles would win strong consumer backing while contributing to economic development.
Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol welcomed Japan’s confidence, noting government measures to reduce production costs, address energy challenges, resolve investor concerns and intensify efforts against online scams.
“Toyota’s success will help encourage more Japanese companies to invest in Cambodia,” he said, adding that the expansion should also attract investors from China, South Korea, the United States and Europe.
Toyota Tsusho Manufacturing has grown rapidly since opening its plant in 2024, assembling more than 6,200 vehicles to date. Monthly output has risen tenfold to around 400 units, with local component use increasing to 20 percent. Cambodia now hosts eight operational vehicle assembly plants with a combined annual capacity of about 38,000 vehicles, while more facilities are under construction.
