PM Hun Manet unveils plan to turn airport and seaport into regional logistics hubs
PHNOM PENH, July 8, 2026 (KPT) – Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet has announced plans to transform Phnom Penh International Airport and the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port into regional logistics hubs, part of a sweeping strategy to position Cambodia as a competitive transport and trade center in Southeast Asia.
Speaking at the inauguration of the newly upgraded National Road No. 7 in Kampong Cham Province on Tuesday, Samdech Thipadei said the government was preparing master plans to modernize the capital’s airport and the country’s flagship deep‑sea port. He said the projects would anchor a nationwide logistics network connecting roads, waterways, airports and seaports to support trade, investment and long‑term growth.

“Our infrastructure strategy is focused on building modern, large‑scale logistics facilities equipped with advanced technology to improve Cambodia’s regional competitiveness and connectivity,” Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said.
He noted that provinces along the Mekong River, including Kampong Cham, Kratie and Kampong Thom, would benefit from improved transport links, while inland provinces such as Battambang would gain easier access to river transport through shorter road connections.
The Prime Minister also highlighted plans to establish an integrated multimodal transport system and develop 11 logistics centers nationwide, aimed at reducing costs and improving supply chain efficiency.
The announcement came as Samdech Thipadei officially opened the US$117 million upgrade of a 45.5‑kilometre section of National Road No. 7, completed 15 months ahead of schedule with financing from China. The four‑lane highway, built by China Road and Bridge Corporation, is seen as a key corridor for agricultural products, industrial goods and tourism, linking Phnom Penh with central and northeastern provinces.
Samdech Thipadei said the long‑term strategy was designed to strengthen national connectivity, promote regional trade and attract investment.
