SVAY RIENG, July 8, 2026 (KPT) – Authorities have concluded a joint mine action project that cleared more than three million square metres of contaminated land in Svay Rieng province, allowing communities to safely use former war‑affected areas for farming and development.

The closing ceremony of the “Mekong‑Lancang Cooperation for Mine Action” project was held in Romeas Hek district, presided over by Senior Minister Ly Thuch, First Vice President of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority, and Chinese Ambassador Wang Wenbin. Senior officials from the foreign ministry, provincial authorities and the Peacekeeping Center also attended.

Ly Thuch said mine clearance remains a vital humanitarian effort to protect communities and transform conflict‑scarred land into safe areas for economic activity.

He stressed that peace and security are essential foundations for national development, reaffirming Cambodia’s commitment to eliminating the threat of landmines and explosive remnants of war.

According to the CMAA, the project cleared more than three million square metres of contaminated land, returned areas to local communities, and supported mine‑risk education to create safer living conditions.

Ly Thuch praised China’s continued support, describing the cooperation as a reflection of strong bilateral ties. He said Chinese assistance has contributed to Cambodia’s development goals and strengthened cooperation under the Cambodia‑China partnership.

The senior minister also highlighted the government’s focus on peace, security and improving living conditions, saying mine clearance remains a priority to ensure people can live without fear of unexploded weapons.

The project forms part of broader cooperation under the Mekong‑Lancang framework to support humanitarian development and address the long‑term impacts of conflict.
