PHNOM PENH, July 9, 2026 (KPT) — Two Vietnamese military officers have joined the ASEAN Observer Team in Cambodia to monitor the ceasefire along the border with Thailand, the defence ministry said Thursday.

Colonel Phung Thanh Quang and Colonel Ly Thanh Tam were welcomed at Techo International Airport by officers from the Department of International Relations and the Cambodia Liaison Group.

The ministry said the two will serve as members of the observer mission, tasked with observing, verifying and reporting on the situation along the frontier following the ceasefire agreement.

Cambodia reaffirmed its support for the observer mission, calling for a stronger role and mandate to ensure the ceasefire and agreed measures are fully implemented.

It said participation from ASEAN member states promotes transparency, accountability and mutual trust, while reinforcing confidence in the peace process.

The government also restated its “firm, sincere and unwavering commitment” to implementing the Joint Statement of the Third Special Meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee in December 2025, the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement of October 2025, and other relevant accords.

According to the ministry, these commitments are aimed at supporting recovery in affected areas and helping to secure lasting peace and stability along the border.

Cambodia said welcoming officers from friendly nations reflects its determination to uphold agreements and strengthen regional cooperation under ASEAN frameworks.
