PHNOM PENH, July 16, 2026 (KPT) — Bilateral trade between Cambodia and Japan rose nearly 17 percent to more than US$1.4 billion in the first half of 2026, driven by strong Cambodian exports, official data showed Thursday.

The General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE) reported two-way trade at US$1.429 billion between January and June. Cambodia’s exports to Japan reached US$906 million, up 20.3 percent year-on-year, while imports from Japan grew 11 percent to US$523 million.

Officials said the increase reflects Japan’s role as a key trading partner and growing commercial ties. Cambodia Chamber of Commerce Vice President Lim Heng attributed the rise to the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), which has facilitated greater flows of garments, electronics and agricultural products.

Economic expert Hong Vannak noted Japanese investors’ long-term presence, citing successful projects such as AEON shopping malls and electronic component factories. He said Japanese businesses remain confident in Cambodia’s investment climate, reinforcing the diplomatic and economic partnership.

In 2025, bilateral trade totaled US$2.53 billion, up 17.14 percent from 2024, underscoring steady momentum.
