Cambodia and Laos advance plans for new Ratanakiri–Attapeu road link

PHNOM PENH, Feb 16, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia and Laos are pressing ahead with plans to build a new cross-border road connecting Cambodia’s Ratanakiri province with Laos’ Attapeu province, aimed at boosting trade, tourism and regional connectivity.

An inter-ministerial delegation from both countries recently carried out joint field inspections and consultations to assess terrain and identify potential sites for the road. The initiative follows agreements reached during a 2024 meeting between the two prime ministers, underscoring their commitment to strengthening cross-border infrastructure.

Officials said the project would facilitate trade flows, improve transport links and promote people-to-people exchanges. It also aligns with the shared goal of fostering a peaceful and cooperative border.

Cambodia and Laos currently share only one international checkpoint – the Trapeang Kriel–Nong Nok Khiene crossing – along their 540-kilometre frontier. Authorities are studying the feasibility of opening a new border gate between Ratanakiri and Attapeu, with two possible sites identified near markers 103 and 145.

The proposed route near Marker 145 is considered strategic, lying close to the Cambodia–Laos–Vietnam tri-border area and providing access to Virachey National Park, a biodiversity-rich eco-tourism destination.

Provincial officials said improved connectivity would unlock economic potential in northeastern Cambodia and southern Laos, creating new opportunities for tourism, commerce and regional development.
